Full job description

In 1851, a New York bookkeeper named George D. Lyman observed the same absurd ritual each afternoon: porters carried bags of coins and bundles of checks bank to bank down Wall Street, settling by hand, a fortune exposed to error and theft. Lyman's fix: send everything through one central office and settle the net. On October 11, 1853, in the basement of 14 Wall Street, 52 banks cleared $22.6 million in a single sitting. Money between banks had stopped being an event and became seamless infrastructure.

A century and a half later, the hard part is unchanged: moving money once is easy; making it work every time, for hundreds of thousands of businesses, across every rail, is hard. The bank account is where a company's financial life happens - payroll clears or it doesn't; a wire lands or a deal slips; the month closes clean, or someone loses a weekend to it. Mercury is building a business banking* product at a scale better than anything else in the market.

Business Banking is the heart of Mercury. We're looking for a Head of Product to own it end-to-end: setting product strategy, leading a team of product managers, driving deposit and payment growth, and owning business performance.

*Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC.

Key responsibilities:

  • Own the P&L, strategy, and product offering: accounts, user experience, payments, new rails, and agents
  • Build AI - and data-driven user experiences at scale better than the alternatives
  • Build and scale the org: recruit and lead a high-performing PM team, instill strong build discipline, develop future leaders, and set an operating cadence and culture that drives pace and quality
  • Deepen the core account and take new products 0-1 to scale: optimize what businesses run on, and invest in new rails, capabilities, and agents so customers can focus on building their companies
  • Make reliability and trust product features: own uptime, correctness, latency, and support outcomes, and be measured on them
  • Align the banking ecosystem: bring product, engineering, design, data, risk, compliance, legal, marketing, sales, support, and partners behind one cohesive strategy

Some things that might make you successful in a role like this:

  • A leader with great product chops, commercial instinct to grow the business, and discipline to run it safely
  • A high bar for craft โ€“ leading a creative, customer-centered, data-driven and experimentation-oriented approach
  • Enthusiasm for building AI- and agent-powered products that drive spectacular customer experiences
  • Exceptional cross-functional leadership across engineering, design, risk, compliance, finance, and partners
  • 10+ years' experience, ideally in banking, payments, platforms, or financial products
  • 5+ years leading product managers: hiring, coaching, org design, and performance management
  • Command of how business banking works: account opening and KYB, deposits and liquidity, payment rails (ACH, wire, check, international, FedNow, RTP)
  • Experience launching and scaling 0-1 financial products, ideally in fintech or another high-growth environment, alongside operating a large product with real customers on it
  • Sound judgment in a regulated, risk-sensitive environment: balance a delightful experience with the controls a banking product requires, and know which corners are never worth cutting
