Full job description
But what makes us different is how we work: we believe great work happens in an environment where you're trusted, heard, and supported. With teams globally, we're building a workplace culture that values collaboration and integrity as much as innovation. If you're looking to advance your career with a company that invests in its people, this is it.
About the role:
The DNS Resolver team develops and maintains one of BlueCat’s core DNS products for the BlueCat Horizon Platform: a high-performance DNS server written in Rust with integrations to AWS, Azure, and GCP, supported by cloud-based services for configuration and control.
We are looking for a Technical Manager to lead a team of software developers ranging from junior through Staff level. This is a hands-on technical management role for someone who wants to stay close to the architecture and implementation while also taking responsibility for the growth of the engineers on the team.
Key Responsibilities:
You will lead the Resolver engineering team and work closely with Product Management, Release Management, and other engineering teams to plan and deliver new capabilities. You’ll be responsible for the mentorship, performance, and career development of your direct reports, helping them achieve their best while identifying and removing roadblocks for the team.
You will be expected to understand the systems the team owns well enough to participate meaningfully in architecture and design discussions, review technical approaches, help investigate difficult problems, and contribute to the codebase when appropriate. You will work closely with senior engineers on architectural direction while helping the team make sound technical decisions and maintain a high standard of engineering quality.
A major focus of the role will be the evolution of Resolver’s cloud management services and their migration onto the Horizon platform.
Responsibilities/Duties:
• Manage, mentor, and support the career development of software developers from junior through Staff level.
• Work with Product Management and Release Management to plan, scope, estimate, and deliver the team’s work.
• Participate in feature design and help translate product requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Work with senior engineers to guide architectural decisions and the evolution of Resolver and its supporting services.
• Maintain a strong focus on software quality, maintainability, performance, and sound architecture.
• Stay close to the implementation through design reviews, code reviews, debugging, and occasional code contributions.
• Help the team design and maintain performance-sensitive and concurrent software.
• Coordinate the technical investigation and triage of customer-reported issues, working with Customer Care and other teams as needed.
• Build strong working relationships across engineering, Product, Release Management, and other parts of BlueCat.
• Represent the Resolver team in cross-team discussions and make sure its technical needs, dependencies, and accomplishments are understood.
• Help the team balance delivery of new functionality with technical debt, reliability, and longer-term architectural improvements.
Qualifications:
• 7+ years of software development experience, ideally including work on systems, networking, distributed systems, or other performance-sensitive software.
• Experience managing software developers or providing substantial technical and people leadership.
• Strong software engineering background and the ability to participate credibly in architecture, design, code review, and technical problem-solving.
• Expertise with Rust, Java, or Go. Rust experience is strongly preferred.
• Expertise with Docker and containerized applications.
• Experience designing, building, or integrating REST APIs and backend services.
• Experience with concurrent, mission critical and performance-sensitive software.
• Strong understanding of computer networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP and HTTP/S.
• Experience with DNS is an asset but is not required.
• Experience working with Kubernetes or other cloud-native platforms.
• Experience with AWS is preferred; Azure or GCP experience is also useful.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfortable working with a team that includes both office-based and fully remote engineers.
