Structural Engineer

Switchboard Hiring is seeking a Structural Engineer on behalf of our client, a growing structural engineering firm in the south Denver metro. Company details will be shared during the first conversation with our team.

If you're one to two years into your career and you'd rather design a steel beam, a timber frame, and a foundation in the same week than spend three years on one project's connection details, let's talk. You'll join the firm's design team, working under a PE-licensed supervisor alongside fellow EITs and drafters. Think of this role as a full-spectrum apprenticeship. You'll get the variety you need while studying for your PE, and you'll have a real shot at leading a team once you pass.

Responsibilities

• Design and analyze structural systems across steel, concrete, masonry, and timber for projects ranging from residential framing and foundation repairs to small commercial builds

• Work across a wide variety of projects on short timelines

• Spend 20–40% of your time in the field conducting structural inspections, foundation assessments, and forensic evaluations

• Support forensic and insurance-related investigations, including fire damage, water damage, and vehicle impacts

• Collaborate and communicate directly with architects, contractors, homeowners, and insurance stakeholders

• Prepare engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and construction documents in compliance with building codes

• Meet weekly with your manager to review defined KPIs, so you always know where you stand and what it takes to reach the next level

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering

• 1–2 years of structural engineering experience

• Steel design experience preferred, especially from commercial projects

• Residential structural or timber design experience is also a plus

• Technical proficiency with Mathcad, Bluebeam, and Autodesk products (Revit/AutoCAD)

• Self-starter who wants to grow with a small, ambitious firm

• Not afraid to get your hands (or shoes) dirty. You'll enjoy time in the field, not just behind a monitor

• Strong communicator who can explain complex issues to diverse stakeholders and deliver both good and challenging news professionally

Career Path

This firm has kept its structure flat on purpose. Instead of climbing through Engineer I, II, III and Project Engineer 1 through 10, the path is engineer, supervisor, director, principal. The firm is growing quickly and promotes from within.

• Management track: After you earn your PE, you'll have an opportunity within 3–5 years to become a Supervisor, leading a team of EITs and drafters and reporting to a Director

• Technical track: You could specialize in the firm's fast-growing forensic engineering practice, where you'll develop expertise beyond traditional structural work, including roofing systems, glazing, and building envelopes

• Passing your PE brings a pay increase on its own. You don't have to wait for a promotion to see it

Interview Process

3. In-person interview - a 90-minute interview with the firm's team leaders.

4. Final interview - a 60-minute in-person interview to meet the rest of the team.

Compensation & Benefits

• Location: South Denver metro (hybrid: a mix of in-office, remote, and field)

• Compensation: $70K - $80K with an increase upon passing the PE
