Full job description

Timeline for This Role: Outreach for next steps will begin in mid-to-late November.

Switchboard works with thousands of campaigns from school board to Senate and Presidential races, strengthening Democratic digital fundraising and organizing programs up and down the ballot. In addition to helping organizations send billions of messages, we’ve continued to build out an integrated suite of tools with the goal of bringing together coordination across outreach channels, powerful analytics, and an easy-to-use platform.

The title Data Scientist can mean a lot of things, and at Switchboard it often means all of them. As a Data Scientist you’ll put curiosity to work as you bring together information and surface insights for our internal teams and our external users. Our team is small but mighty and works together with our Customer Experience, Product, and Engineering teams to answer questions.

You should apply if you're interested in puzzles, you like learning new things, and if you’re comfortable hopping between different areas of work day-to-day. On any given day you might be analyzing the efficacy of certain types of donor outreach; building a new reputation score for email senders; tweaking alerts that monitor our traffic; or improving our internal question-answering agent.

We’re looking for someone who is comfortable communicating with stakeholders of any technical skill level, querying petabyte-scale data, contributing to a production-level python codebase, and producing analysis for customers. You’ll be asked to answer questions you might not initially know how to answer, help interpret why something’s gone wrong, or help users out of a pinch with some SQL.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working collaboratively with the Customer Experience team and our users to provide insights and guidance on texting and emailing programs or other tooling
  • Designing tools and workflows that will help campaigns and organizations run more efficient and effective digital programs through evidence and experimentation
  • Building meaningful visualizations and reports for both internal and external use
  • Helping build and contribute to a positive team culture

Ideal Candidates Have:

  • Used texting and email tools and their associated data (Switchboard, Scale to Win, Numero, ActBlue, ActionKit, Action Network, NGPVAN)
  • Worked for campaigns or other demonstrated interest in the progressive ecosystem
  • At least 2 years of experience working hands-on with SQL (preferably with dbt) and Python
  • Experience with data visualization (Hex, Sigma, Omni), databases (BigQuery, Postgres), and LLM tooling/harnesses
  • Humility and empathy: understanding both the promise and the limitations of what data can tell us, and the priorities of our customers who are often in high-pressure situations
  • A high level of comfort jumping into a complex system and seeking understanding from day one
  • A strong sense of ownership and independence, often needing to make decisions without perfect information

Compensation

  • $140,000- $185,000 annual salary and an equity grant, depending on experience
  • Switchboard covers 100% of health, dental, and vision coverage for employees and 80% for dependents
  • 21 days of paid time off plus federal holidays
  • Unlimited sick leave
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for parents of any gender, including adoptive parents
  • 401(K) match with immediate vesting
  • Vibrant hybrid workplace in Washington D.C.
