The mission of the Waymo AI Foundations team is to develop machine learning solutions addressing open problems in autonomous driving, towards the goal of safely operating Waymo vehicles in dozens of cities and under all driving conditions. As part of our work, we also initiate and foster collaborations with other research teams in Alphabet. AI Foundations areas that we are currently focusing on include reinforcement learning, learning from demonstration, generative modeling, Bayesian inference, hierarchical learning, and robust evaluation.

The expected base salary range for this full-time position is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Research and develop machine learning systems that analyze narrative text, improve NLP models, and bring research results into game-development demos while balancing quality, cost, and latency.
Leads survey and statistical research on STEM workforce indicators, serving as principal investigator or co-PI and shaping study methods, data integration, quality practices, analysis, and reporting.
Research and improve voice AI models by turning customer problems into measurable goals, designing evaluations, curating data, fine-tuning models, and shipping production-ready solutions.
Leads computational protein design research, building and validating reusable methods, benchmarks, and agentic workflows that guide experimental studies and enable new therapeutic applications.
Build chemistry-focused reinforcement learning environments, datasets, and evaluations, using computational chemistry and machine learning expertise to train and assess models on real-world chemistry tasks.
